2. Electrical Engineering
3. Randolph College - Squishy Circuits (3/27/15)
Upon arrival, the STEMmers were given large LED lights and small disc batteries. After figuring out how to the batteries light the bulbs, the 4th graders were able to use a magnet and a sticker to attach the light to their shirts.
Next, the STEMmers were given play dough that could conduct electricity. They used this dough as "wires" to make a circuit. Then they were given a dough that was not conducive and had to sculpt anything they like using both types of dough to make a circuit that will light a bulb and sound a buzzer. This activity couldn't have fit in with our unit than if it was planned months ago! This entire maker workshop was led by Dr. Rebecca Thompson, co-author of the Spectra: The Laser Superhero. Each 4th grader was even given a copy of her comic book.
And although I don't have pictures of it, the dining hall at Randolph was the star of the trip! The kids thoroughly enjoyed having unlimited access to a variety of yummy foods, drinks, and desserts. I think we'd still be there if it was up to them!
A big "THANKS" to Dr. Peter Sheldon and the organizers of Randolph College's scifest for inviting us for a great day of learning and fun!
